interview // dj maj

What the science behind your name?

This cat that started me out in DJing gave me the name "Majik" back when I lived in Lafayette, LA.  Se saw me cutting one night and said that he could not see my hands.    It kind of evolved into Maj over the years

What motivated you to get into this industry?

I started out working out with a guy named Mike Linney who was doing Christian rap at the time.  I came to know the Lord by being around him and others who lived authentic Christianity (as a relationship).   It gave me no more excuses about my lack of commitment to what I was taught as a child. God wanted all of me and He showed me that I had a purpose with the gift he'd given me.

What was your first single/recording?

I started out working on unknown/unsigned hypes first.  I guess the first known person would be Mike E's joint - Good News For The Bad Times.

What was your favorite single/recording you did?

I think the most excited stuff I did was on the DC Talk  - Free At Last Album

What should we expect from you in the future?

Hopefully more mix joints, a world wide live radio show, Virtual Frequency concert tours, productions (beats), saved souls, angry devils, controversy.  Stuff like that.

What instruments do you use?

Turntables & pro CD players.

How would you classify your style as an artist?

That's a question for an outsider.  I've been able to touch all aspects of Djing.  Radio, rap show Dj, scratching and a few tricks here and there..   I'm not sure where all that fits.

What artist(s) have you not worked with, but would like to?

Crossmovement, Truth, Cross Cypha, Souljahz, just to name a few.

Growing up, who do you think was a few of your biggest musical influences?

For me, just about anyone in Hip Hop to my high school band director (he was probably on of my biggest influences).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years I hope to be in a good position to bring up other acts both musically and spiritually.

What do you feel is the toughest part of the music industry

The toughest part for me is probably getting people use to the idea of a Christian party....especially in the urban church community where traditionalism has such a big stronghold on the youth.  If I'm not playing music with a choir in it, people don't know how to react to it.  Yet, they desire to experience the freedom in that type of fellowship/worship.  This is also because there is not an investment of "GOD" into young people in these communities.  They're getting tradition and religion and not relationship.  They're getting nice clothes, a good education, savings, and nice cars, but they're turning around and living whatever on Monday-Saturday.  On Sunday, they're saints.  It's going to take some time.   May be my son will see it come to maturity.

What would the ultimate reward for you be?

It's rewarding to me when I see people come to know Christ through what I do.  I received a letter from a cat in jail who's life was tremendously impacted by the Virtual Frequency program (www.virtualfrequency.com).  It's also a blessing to help give other groups exposure.  That's my job as a DJ.

What message are you trying to get across to fans?

My message is FREEDOM in Christ ONLY and investing in the next generation. To invest God into youth.

What is your favorite Bible verse(s)?

1 Cor 2:9

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who live Him.

If someone were to look in your CD player or tape player right now what would be in it?

I've been checking out this unsigned kid name Truth.   The new Knowdaverbs joint too.

Personally what does hiphop mean to you?

Hip Hop to me has always been a way of expression that's also become a big influence on society.   I'm proud to be a part of where it's come from and where it is going.

If you could change one thing in world, what would it be?

To bring it back to it's original state (EDEN)

What would you like to say to all the new artists in the game?

Mainly to be at the peak of obedience to Christ at all times.  No matter what you feelings or common sense says.  It will save you a world of trouble an unnecessary time wasted trying too hard.  Enjoy your days, your family...every breath and more than anything MAKE DISCIPLES
